Siena’s fifth-year senior Olivia Lomascolo showed that she is primed for the remainder of the championship part of the season for the women’s cross country team.
Lomascolo, from Ballston Lake and a Shenendehowa High graduate, was third out of 338 finishers at the IC4A/ECAC Championship last Friday at Van Cortlandt Park in New York City. Her 6,000-meter (3.73-mile) time was 21 minutes, 10 seconds. She opened the season with back-to-back personal bests when she finished first in the Siena Invitational on Sept. 10 and 40th out of 417 in the featured Gold Division race at the Paul Short Run on Sept. 30. Her 5,000-meter (3.1-mile) time at the Siena event was 17:57.4 and her 6,000-meter time at the Paul Short was 20:17.8. Both marks are Siena records.
Next up for Lomascolo will be the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Championship Oct. 29 on Siena’s home course at The Crossings of Colonie. She finished third last year. After that will be the NCAA Northeast Regionals on Nov. 11 back at Van Cortlandt Park.
The sophomore has started all 12 games on defense for the Union men’s soccer team. The Dutchmen are 3-7-2 overall and 0-4-1 in Liberty League play after a 3-1 league loss at Ithaca last Saturday. The CBA graduate scored his first collegiate goal and it was a game winner in a 3-0 victory over Plattsburgh. Senior Evan Farr of Saratoga Springs (Saratoga High) has three goals and an assist while junior goalkeeper Sean Speck of Burnt Hills (Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake High) has a 2-6-2 record in 10 starts, giving up 15 goals (1.43 goals-against average) with 29 saves and two shutouts and part of a third.
The freshman had a solid season playing with the Sage women’s tennis team. The Gators finished 5-8 on the season. The Shenendehowa High graduate posted a 9-3 record at No. 1 singles and a 7-4 mark in No. 1 doubles. Sophomore Emma Nuzzi of Scotia (Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake High) finished with a 5-8 record at No. 2 singles and was 6-6 playing both No. 1 and No. 2 doubles. She and Spivey were 5-2 when they played together at No. 1.
The junior recorded his first college victory to help the Cobleskill men’s cross country team finish second at the Western New England Golden Bear Invitational last Saturday in Springfield, Mass. The Queensbury High graduate covered the 8,000-meter (4.97-mile) course in 26:22 to top a field of 88 runners. Freshman Jack Gemmett of Schenectady (Schalmont High) was third with a time of 27:10. The Fighting Tigers finished with 45 points to trail only Maine Maritime, which posted a score of 42.
The sophomore led the SUNY Adirondack men’s soccer team in scoring. The Timberwolves finished 4-10 on the season. The Saratoga High graduate had 18 points on seven goals and four assists with a pair of game winners – in an 8-0 win over Vermont Tech and a 5-0 victory against Niagara CC. He had two goals in both games. Freshman Lucas Cottrell of Schuylerville (Schuylerville High) chipped in with three goals. He had both of Adirondack’s scores in a 13-2 loss to Onondaga CC, one of the top teams in Region 3.
The sophomore finished first to help the Hudson Valley women’s cross country team capture the Mohawk Valley Conference Championship last Saturday in Johnstown. The Ballston High graduate covered the 5,000-meter course in 21:36. Sophomore Eva Sgambettera finished third in 23:33. The men also finished first. Sophomore Eric Zumpe of Rifton was second in the men’s race with an 8,000-meter time of 28:59 while freshman Jake Kinnicutt of Schaghticoke (Hoosic Valley) was fifth (30:21).
The sophomore outside hitter will lead the Fulton-Montgomery women’s volleyball team when the 19-3 Raiders host the Mountain Valley Conference Championship this weekend in Johnstown. The Gloversville High graduate has 243 digs, 184 kills and 72 service aces. Sophomore Deandra Myers of Gloversville (Mayfield High) has 147 digs, 131 kills, 30 aces and a team-high 30 total blocks. Sophomore Aireana Muhlberger of Gloversville (Gloversville High) leads the team with 571 assists.
