HUDSON — The Catskill Cats defeated the Greenville Spartans 2-1 Thursday night in the semifinals of the Patroon Championship Tournament for boys soccer.
Josue Tubon and Carlos Lemus scored one goal apiece for Catskill and Ben Reinhard converted a penalty kick for Greenville’s only goal in the contest. Catskill will play Maple Hill this weekend to determine the champion of the Patroon Conference.
Both teams had to contend with an all but constant downpour the entire length of the game, with the wind kicking up drastically in the final minutes.
The Spartans passed it in for Foster Britton early, but the ball rolled out for a Catskill throw. Greenville worked it back into the Cats’ box quickly but the defense stole it back to clear. Down at the other end, Catskill’s Chase Allen crossed it in front of the net for Carter Van Etten but he missed a wide open net and the ball went out for a goal kick.
A free kick by Catskill near midfield sailed wide and Greenville sent it back the other way. Reinhard tried to pass it long down the field but it tipped off of a Catskill player and rolled out of the intended path. Spartans keeper Bryant Flensted booted a ball upfield and past the Cats’ defense, but it was too far for teammate Jonas Britton on Catskill’s half of the field.
Greenville earned a corner but the kick was shanked and sailed behind the Catskill net. The Cats got a free kick themselves in Spartan territory, but the ball landed right in the hands of keeper Flensted. Dominic Lanuto booted it on another Catskill free kick, Flensted punched out the shot attempt, and the ball was cleared by the defense before the Cats could punt a rebound back toward the goal.
Going the other way, Reinhard dribbled through multiple defenders and dumped it off to Harrison McAneny, whose shot went over the crossbar for another goal kick courtesy of Cats goalie Danny Forbes. Minutes later, Greenville’s Joe Davis stole the ball from Catskill’s David Navarro to stop an attack by the offense. However, the Cats regained control on the Spartans’ side of the field and Josue Tubon lofted a ball in from outside the box and it rolled past Flensted for a goal. Catskill took a 1-0 lead thanks to the broken play, with 15:48 left in the first half.
The Spartans stuck to the gameplan and almost got a great opportunity at an equalizer when Joe Davis slipped past the Cats’ defense almost completely unnoticed. Nate Shook caught up with him and though he missed the slide tackle, he shadowed Davis until almost the end-line and forced the ball out for a goal kick.
Davis got past everyone yet again moments later, but Zander Schanz hustled to pull even with him and kicked it out for a corner. Fortunately for Catskill, they recovered quickly and the corner kick was deflected out for a goal kick. The Cats kept the pressure on and were awarded another free kick.
Devin Fitzmaurice lined up for the kick, booted it long, and after a bounce or two Catskill regained possession and Carlos Lemus headed it into the net to put the Cats ahead 2-0. After killing a few minutes off the clock, Catskill took their 2-0 lead over Greenville into halftime.
Starting the second half, Harrison McAneny tried to connect a pass into Cats’ territory but he put a little too much on it and it rolled past everyone. Reinhard tried to cut through a group of defenders again but he lost the handle and Catskill took it the other way.
Davis got a pass in the Cats’ zone but his subsequent shot on goal was taken too early and it went out for another goal kick. Greenville got a free kick after a foul near the 30 yard line and Reinhard took it for the Spartans. On the kick, one of the Cats’ defenders fouled a Spartan in the box and Greenville was given a penalty kick. Reinhard was elected for the penalty shot, and he buried it in the back of the net at the 31:04 mark to cut the Catskill lead to 2-1.
The teams fought back and forth to a nothing short of a stalemate for the remainder of the game. Missed opportunities on free kicks multiple times by both sides kept the game close as the rain continued to drench the turf and the wind blew even harder.
The Spartans got a corner late in the contest but once again, the pass was pushed too far and the ball was out for a goal kick as soon as it was kicked. Catskill keeper Danny Forbes grabbed a loose ball in the box that rolled between two Cats’ defenders and that could have tied the game in the final minutes in regulation.
Every time the Spartans drove inside the Cats’ zone the ball was cleared out by the defense and Catskill was finally able to kill the rest of the time off the clock. At the final horn the Catskill Cats defeated the Greenville Spartans 2-1 in a thrilling nail-biter and will face the Maple Hill Wildcats for the Patroon Championship on Saturday at 2 p.m. at Taconic Hills High School.

Coxsackie-Athens 1
WATERVLIET — Maple Hill punched its ticket to Saturday’s Patroon Tournament championship with a 3-1 victory over Coxsackie-Athens on Thursday at Watervliet High School.
The Wildcats took a 1-0 lead by the end of the first half when Gavin Haller took a pass from Dillon Halvax and found the back of the net.
Maple Hill added goals in the second alf from Kaeden Morse and Hamilton Davids to wrap up the victory.

Catskill 0
CATSKILL — Emersyn Grupe scored two goals to spark Greenville to a 3-0 victory over Catskill in Thursday’s Patroon Conference Girls Soccer Tournament semifinal at Catskill High School.
Ella Grupe had a goal for the Spartans. Anna Motta an Melina Burgmann each had an assist.
Spartans goalkeeper Cameryn Childs collected six saves in posting the shutout. Catskll’s Olivia White stopped 13 shots.
Greenville will play Chatham for the Patroon championship on Saturday at noon at Taconic Hills High School.

Maple Hill 3 (PKs)
CRARYVILLE — After battling through regulation and two overtime periods without scoring, Chatham edged Maple Hill, 4-3, in penalty kicks to earn a trip to the Patroon Conference Girls Soccer Tournament championship game.
The Panthers will play Greenville for the title on Saturday at noon at Taconic Hills High School.
