Olivia Lomascolo was the prerace pick to capture the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference individual title at the league championship on Saturday in Colonie. And the Siena College standout lived up to her billing.
The fifth-year student from Ballston Lake and a Shenendehowa High graduate became the first Saints cross country runner in program history to finish at the head of the field in the league meet. Lomascolo topped the runner-up by 10 seconds with a 6,000-meter (3.73-mile) time of 21 minutes, 13.6 seconds on the course at The Crossings.
Siena’s women’s team finished second to Quinnipiac with 46 points. The men also finished second behind a powerful Iona team with 61 points.
Senior Elaine Atanasova (Duanesburg High) chipped in with an eighth-place finish with a time of 21:42.4. Junior Katharine Hesler (Niskayuna High) didn’t figure in the scoring for Siena, but finished 21st out of 123 runners with a time of 22:33.2.
Seniors Aidan Gillooley (Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake High) and Tommy Anderson (Ballston Spa High) had solid efforts for the men. Gillooley finished 12th out of 142 with an 8,000-meter (4.97-mile) time of 24:38.4 while Anderson was 15th in 25:02.4. Senior Brandon Olden of Chestertown led the men’s team with a fourth-place finish in 23:53.0.
The five area runners all earned All-MAAC academic honors, Lomascolo for the fourth time. The program had a school record 29 men and women make the list.
The sophomore, a Greenville High graduate, finished ninth, and graduate student Amanda Chambers (Colonie High) was 10th to help the UAlbany women’s cross country team finish fourth at the America East Championship on Saturday in Kingsville, Md. Fitzmaurice covered the 5,000-meter (3.1-mile) course in 17:38.7, while Chambers posted a personal-best time of 17:43.7. The UAlbany men finished eighth.
The graduate student, a Cohoes High graduate, and junior Kennedy Jones (Albany High) will lead the Sage women’s soccer team into the Empire 8 Conference Tournament, opening as the third seed. The Gators are hosting Alfred in a first-round game Tuesday in Albany. Ricci has six goals and four assists with a game winner. Jones has six goals and three assists with four game winners. She picked up her fourth when she scored the decider in a 3-2 league victory over Houghton on Saturday to earn league Player of the Week honors.
The Cobleskill junior was named to the first team and freshman teammate Jack Gemmett (Schalmont High) earned second-team honors at the North Atlantic Conference men’s cross country championship on Saturday in Canton. Logan, a Queensbury High graduate, finished fourth with an 8,000-meter time of 26:47.9. Gemmett finished 12th, covering the distance with a time of 27:33.4.
The 5-foot-4 senior attack scored two goals, including the game winner at the 1:06 mark in overtime, in a 3-2 nonleague victory over Oneonta on Saturday. The Engineers finished 8-9 overall and 1-6 in the Liberty League. The Taconic Hills High graduate totaled 16 points on seven goals and two assists. She had another game winner when she scored two goals in a 3-0 victory over St. John Fisher on Sept. 25.
The 5-5 senior scored all three goals, including the game winner in overtime, to lead the Sage field hockey team to a 3-2 Empire 8 Conference victory over Elmira on Saturday. It was the first league win for the Gators, who finished 2-13 overall and 1-8 in the league. The Queensbury High graduate scored seven goals and had two assists for 16 points and was named league Player of the Week on Monday.
The freshman was one of four Hudson Valley men’s soccer players earning NJCAA All-Region 3 third-team honors. The Vikings finished 9-6-3 on the season. The Albany High graduate had nine goals and four assists for 22 points. Sophomore defender Ty Plumley (Waterford-Halfmoon High) and freshmen Cristo Trujillo of Wallkill and Phenyo Ward of Gaborone, Botswana, were also named.
