MECHANICVILLE, NY – It took about ten minutes for the Red Raiders to break through the Fonda-Fultonville defense on Thursday night, but once they did, the flood gates completely opened.
The Red Raiders cruised to an 8-0 victory over the Braves, advancing to the quarterfinal round of the Section II Class B tournament.
“It was just about keeping the possession, moving the ball around and shooting when you can,” said Mechanicville senior captain Luke Micklas. “If it doesn’t fall, then just try again and keep up the pressure.”

The game got off to a delayed start, since the Braves’ team bus got stuck behind a train on the way to Mechanicville. Once the game did get started, it was Colin McNutt who provided the Red Raiders the lead, coming on an assist from Fen Egan.
“He’s been so unselfish this year. He’s our guy,” Mechanicville coach Mike Ciulla said of McNutt. “There’s so many different things he can do and it was nice to see him punch the first one in.”
About 15 minutes into the game, Micklas took a lining shot that was blocked by the Fonda keeper and eventually finished off by Rece Dyer, who went on to score another goal in the second half.
McNutt was credited with Mechanicville’s third goal of the game, while Joey DeVito also punched in a pair of goals for the Red Raiders. Tom Wendel and Scotty Lynch also joined the scoring effort.
Lynch and Logan Starks each added two assists, while Declan Charette had an assist in his first game on varsity.
Charette is one of four junior varsity callups, including Alex Micare, Alex Shakow and Brody Bergeron-Waite.
“We have a deep bench. All our JV callups played tonight,” Ciulla said. “It’s more than just having a lot of guys score in a section game, but having guys come up and get that experience. It’s a different feel when you get out there in sectional time and it keeps everybody humble.”
With the win over #16 Fonda, top-seeded Mechanicville (15-0-2) advances to the quarterfinal round, where they’ll face #8 Broadalbin-Perth (7-9-1). The Patriots won their first-round matchup on Thursday against #9 Coxsackie-Athens, by a score of 3-1.
The Red Raiders edged Broadalbin-Perth in the Class B semifinals last year, 2-1.
“Sometimes you can get a little too high after a game like this. Hopefully we all keep our heads in the right place and come out with the same intensity,” Micklas said of the win. “Our defense is extremely solid. Our offense has improved a lot and we’re pretty solid up top. We just have to start out intense up top and keep that up the whole game. We’re so well-conditioned. As long as we play entire games, we should end up where we want to be.”
