The Siena men’s soccer team has a familiar name in goal this season.
Graduate student Greg Monroe of Clifton Park, and a Shenendehowa High graduate, has started all eight games for the 4-3-1 Saints. He has given up 11 goals (1.43 goals-against average) and has 36 saves (.766 save percentage). He has two shutouts and part of the third and earned Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week twice (Aug. 29 and Sept. 19).
Monroe has played 70 games in his career and has given up 113 goals (1.59 GAA) with 322 saves (.740 save percentage). He has 18 shutouts and has a 24-35-9 career record. The victory total is the best in Saints’ history.
A two-time Times Union first-team all-star (2016 and 2017), Monroe also does well in the classroom. He’s a three-time MAAC All-Academic selection.
The senior, an Albany Academy graduate, is starting on defense for the Union women’s soccer team, which opened the season with seven shutouts before the string was snapped with a 1-0 loss to St. Lawrence in a Liberty League game last Saturday. The 7-1 Dutchwomen are also getting solid play from juniors Meghan Piser and Cassidy Careccia, both of Latham and Shaker High, and sophomore Addie Zimmerman of Niskayuna (Niskayuna High).
The junior led the Cobleskill men’s cross country team to a third-place finish in the annual Airfield Invitational last Saturday in Oneonta. The Queensbury High graduate finished second out of 47 runners with an 8,000-meter (4.97-mile) time of 26 minutes, 13.6 seconds. Freshman Jack Gemmett of Schenectady (Schalmont High) was fifth in 27:01.5. On Sept. 20 he earned his third straight North Atlantic Conference Rookie of the Week honor.
The 5-foot-7 junior outside hitter has played in 14 matches and 50 sets for the St. Rose women’s volleyball team. The Golden Knights are 7-8 overall and 1-1 in the Northeast-10 Conference after a 3-2 league victory over Pace last Saturday. The Guilderland High graduate has 72 kills, 65 digs and 15 blocks. Sophomore Katelyn Atchinson of Alplaus (Niskayuna High) has chipped in with 29 assists and 11 service aces.
The 6-1 junior middle hitter has started nine matches and played 30 sets for the Skidmore women’s volleyball team. The Thoroughbreds are 2-9 overall and 0-2 in the Liberty League after a 3-1 league loss to Union last Saturday. The Niskayuna High graduate had a season-high 11 kills in the match. On the season, Sacco has 36 kills and leads the team with 22 blocks.
The junior soccer goalkeeper was named Empire 8 Conference Co-Defensive Player of the Week on Sept. 19 and the Shaker High graduate celebrated by making eight saves in a 1-0 shutout over Elmira last Saturday. Brennan is 3-2 for the 4-2-1 Gators, giving up seven goals with 24 saves. Sophomore Jordan Prouty of Cohoes (Cohoes High) is the backup goalie. He’s 1-0 after blanking SUNY Canton 3-0 on Sept. 20.
The 5-4 senior attack has started all eight games for the RPI field hockey team. The Engineers are 4-4 overall and 0-1 league after dropping a 5-1 decision to Vassar last Saturday. The Taconic Hills High graduate has scored two goals – one in a 4-1 victory over SUNY Brockport and another in a 6-2 triumph over Castleton. They were the fifth and sixth scores of her career.
The freshman finished 20th against mainly Division III opponents for the Hudson Valley men’s cross country team at Bard’s Fred Pavlich Invitational last Saturday. The Hoosic Valley graduate covered the 6,000-meter (3.73-mile) course in 21:30.4. The Vikings, who finished third out of 11 schools, got a fifth-place finish from sophomore Eric Zumpe of Rifton, who posted a time of 20:13.3.
