CHATHAM —The Chatham Panthers defended their home turf Thursday afternoon and defeated the Germantown Clippers, 8-0, in Patroon Conference boys soccer.
Alex Chudy, Timothy Jeralds, and Miguel Casarrubias-Rivera each scored two goals for the Panthers and Aiden Shea kept Germantown scoreless for the shutout. Otto Maxwell and Angus Wood also scored one goal apiece to round out the offense for the Panthers.
Both teams battled for position on the sidelines early in the contest near midfield for a competitive first few minutes. Leander Hesse stole a pass inside the box for Chatham to keep it away from the Clippers. Germantown got a corner kick out of it but Maxwell Friedman cleared it out of harms’ way for the Panthers and Timothy Jeralds booted it into the net for a 1-0 lead.
Germantown got a shot towards the net to put some pressure on Chatham the other way, and it went off of Aiden Shea’s hands and hit the post behind him, but he scrambled and fell on the loose ball for the save. Shea had another good stop on a boot by the Clippers from outside the box, and he kicked it up the field for the Panthers.
Both sides put shots on goal in the next few minutes, but both went out for goal kicks. Chatham was awarded a penalty kick after a player was taken down inside the box, and Chudy stepped up and buried it in the back of the goal for a 2-0 Panthers lead.
A goal kick for Chatham found Casarrubias-Rivera, who tried to put it downfield for Jeralds but his desperate stretch on the eventual shot went out for a Germantown goal kick.
The Panthers broke through the Clippers’ defense once again and Chudy punted it in for his second goal of the afternoon and a 3-0 lead. Chatham had another golden opportunity with a numbers advantage on a breakaway, but Alex Schwab’s shot went high over the crossbar.
The Clippers had the Panthers backpedaling on defense at last, but the ball was stolen, taken upfield, and Casarrubias-Rivera put it in the net for a 4-0 Panthers lead. Chatham stole the ball on defense again as the half neared its end and Jacob Carroll crossed a ball beautifully for Angus Wood, who headed it into the goal to put the Panthers up 5-0 by the break.
Chatham stayed aggressive yet disciplined to start the second half, but were too fast for their own good on a few plays and they were called offsides multiple times. Schwab got the ball for the Panthers, on sides this time, crossed it to Chudy who missed a chance at a header. Lucky for Chatham, Jeralds was there to clean up the miss and scored his second goal of the game to make it 6-0.
The Panthers earned a couple corner kicks, but passed the ball out short and had it taken away by the Clippers. Chatham was awarded another penalty kick after Oliver Carroll was taken down inside the box. Carroll stepped up to take the shot, had good power on it, but pulled it wide of the net to the left and out for a goal kick.
The Panthers kept up the pressure though and Otto Maxwell slipped past the Clippers’ defense on a throw-in by Chudy, and buried in the goal for Chatham’s seventh goal of the day. Schwab had a couple shots on net that went out for goal kicks or were cleared by Germantown, as the Panthers remained relentless on the attack.
Chatham got a free kick outside of the box and Casarrubias-Rivera lined it up and fired a liner off his boot past the row of Clippers defenders set up in the box, and past a diving keeper for a goal. This capped off the game in the final minutes for the Chatham Panthers, put them up 8-0, and allowed them to stay busy enough to run the clock out on the Germantown Clippers and secure the home shutout.
