HUDSON — The Hudson Bluehawks defeated the Taconic Hills Titans 2-1 in Patroon Conference bys soccer action on Wednesday afternoon.
All scoring came in the first half for these teams with Anthony Garcia and Enam Ahmed scoring goals for the Bluehawks, and Kobe VanAlstyne netting the lone goal for the Titans.
Tariq Thompson put an early shot on net for the Bluehawks that was stopped by Titans keeper Brigido Antonio Velis. Hudson remained aggressive with their ball movement and passing in the early goings. Adonias Mercado had a breakaway opportunity in the beginning stages of the contest for the Titans but a Hudson defender caught up to him and the keeper Araf Ghani fell on the loose ball for a save.
The Titans had another early chance after a cross by Michael Banyard into the box was booted out for a corner kick. On the ensuing pass Kobe VanAlstyne found the back of the net for Taconic Hills at 34:38 and gave them a 1-0 lead.
The Bluehawks took it the other way and Thompson sent another shot into the box but it was saved again by Velis. Ghani answered on the other side for Hudson with another save as well on a shot by VanAlstyne. The Titans stole the ball soon thereafter and Jonny Robles booted a laser of a shot from almost 30 yards out, over the crossbar and out for a goal kick.
The Bluehawks’ Anthony Garcia took a chance on a long kick far outside of the box as well, and it tipped off of the outstretched hands of Velia and over him into the goal. With the game tied 1-1 at just the 30:15 mark of the first half, the teams looked evenly matched to this point and were in for a competitive game.
Matt Welch got a little overzealous on a breakaway for the Bluehawks a few moments later, and collided with Velis. Welch was assessed a yellow card after his foot inadvertently found the back of Velis’ neck and he was on the ground momentarily before heading to the bench.
Jeffrey Flores was called on for Taconic Hills and he threw the keeper jersey on, got Velis’ gloves, and headed for the goalie box. Velis would not return but Flores did an incredible job in net the rest of the way for the Titans.
Enam Ahmed tested Flores early with a shot on goal but Flores tipped it out for a corner kick. The corner yielded no results for Hudson and the Titans took it back the other way and yet another boot toward the net by VanAlstyne was saved by Ghani. Welch checked back into the game and got involved again quickly as the Bluehawks moved it back down into the Titans’ box again.
Welch sent a ball at the goal that was punched out by Flores for a Hudson corner kick. On the corner, Taconic Hills’ Fabian Gitt-Henderson knocked down Welch of the Bluehawks and the officials initially called for a penalty kick. After a short conference, the other official had a better angle and determined that the tackle happened outside the goalie box.
The subsequent free kick was taken by Thompson just outside the box, and the kick sailed high over the crossbar for a goal kick. The Bluehawks had another good chance on a corner a few minutes later, but it was tipped out high over the net again for another kick for Velis. Velis’ kick was short and stolen by Hudson’s Enam Ahmed, and he needed just a few strides to dribble into the box and bury it in the far side of the net for the go-ahead goal.
With 7:21 left in the half, the Bluehawks had a 2-1 lead and played a half step ahead of Taconic Hills on defense the rest of the way to hold the Titans to one goal. The Titans’ last chance came down to a header down in the box as the skies opened up and the rain blurred everyone’s vision.
Taconic Hills missed a header on a pass and Hudson recovered the ball to clear it out of harm’s way and run out the rest of the clock. After a very competitive battle Wednesday, the Hudson Bluehawks were victorious 2-1 at home over the Taconic Hills Titans.
Hudson will host Watervliet this Friday and Taconic Hills’ next match-up comes against Maple Hill at home Friday night.
