CRARYVILLE — The Cairo-Durham Mustangs defeated the Taconic Hills Titans 2-1 Thursday in a boys soccer match-up in the Patroon Conference.
Zander Santarelli and Nick Olivett scored goals for the Mustangs and the Titans Kobe Van Alstyne scored Taconic Hills’ lone goal near the end of the first half.
The Mustangs controlled the ball after the opening whistle, but the Titans got themselves a corner kick just 90 seconds into the contest. The early chance did not result in any points for Taconic Hills but they stayed aggressive. The Mustangs recovered nicely after the quick corner and moved the ball with more ease once they warmed up.
The Titans lost the ball to a goal kick for Cairo-Durham, but the Mustangs got to the other end of the field and lost it out of bounds for another goal kick going the opposite way. Taconic Hills almost broke away for a massive opportunity, but a Titans player was taken down by a Mustang defender as they both went for the ball.
The Mustangs took advantage of a lapse in the Titans defense shortly after the stoppage, and Zander Santarelli scored at 33:47 to give C-D a 1-0 lead.
Braeden Deyo put a shot on goal for the Mustangs a few moments later, but it was saved by the Titans’ keeper. Then C-D’s Connell Deyo had to limp to the bench after rolling his ankle on a crossover by the Titans. Shortly thereafter, C-D’s keeper Colin MacGiffert had to fall on a loose ball to prevent any Titans from getting it any closer to the net. A few plays later, Nicholas
Olivett took a free kick for the Mustangs and the ball went off the keeper’s hands to give C-D a corner. Olivett capitalized on the second chance for the Mustangs, and buried it into the net for a goal at the 23:37 mark and C-D led 2-0.
MacGiffert grabbed another deflection inside the box for another save as Taconic Hills turned up the heat on offense but could not finish the play. Down on the other end, C-D failed to convert on another corner kick, and the Titans cleared a dangerously close ball, almost 40 yards up the field and across to the opposite side to give the defense a second to breathe.
C-D’s Nolan McCabe went down around midfield on a subsequent play, clutching at his knee, and had to be helped to the bench by two teammates. A Titans player sliced through the Mustang defense on one play, but his shot was stopped by MacGiffert. MacGiffert made another clutch save, leaping to catch a pass out of the air on a Titans corner kick.
Taconic Hills would not relent on the pressure to close out the half however, and Titans Kobe Van Alstyne found the back of the net after cleaning up a loose ball in the box to get his team on the board. MacGiffert stayed busy in the final seconds of the half, and made a diving save as the clock reached 0:00 to preserve the Mustangs’ 2-1 lead at the break.
Van Alstyne put a shot on net just moments into the second half, but it was caught on a line by MacGiffert. Then a shot by the Mustangs went wide for another goal kick to stifle their momentum.
Taconic Hills’ keeper came back with a nice save of his own as the Titans still trailed 2-1 and put as much offense together as they could. Almost midway through the second half, the Mustangs finally got an extended possession on the Titans’ side of the field and were able to work the clock a bit.
The Titans answered with a great chance on a Titans attack, but the play developed too quickly and he had no one to pass to down in the box, losing possession. TH cleared a ball out of the zone after a shot by Braeden Deyo.
The Mustangs were awarded a free kick after Andrew Burke got knocked down in a fight for the ball. The Titans cleared the ball away from their net but they had little time to put sufficient offense going to try and tie it up late in the game. TH sent a shot toward the net on a play that had not fully developed for Taconic Hills, and it careened out for another MacGiffert goal kick. Mustang Antonio Brooks got the ball down on the far side of the field and put a shot on the Titans’ net to take some more time off the clock in the final minutes.
The Titans had one last chance when they earned a free kick with eight seconds left, but due to the running clock at the varsity level for soccer, Taconic Hills was unable to line up for the kick in time and the time ran out.
The Cairo-Durham Mustangs held on to win a tight game down to the final seconds, 2-1, on the road over the Taconic Hills Titans as the sun set on Thursday afternoon.
